Composed of hundreds of moth wings collected from lamps and windows, Mothlight is one of Brakhage’s best known films. The delicate moth wings were painstakingly collected up by Brakhage and pressed together between two layers of tape, which then became the actual film that was fed through the projector. Apparently, the process gnarled the original beyond further use; however, the first resulting film is a lepidopteric montage of subtle dance and captivating movement.
In his catalogues, Brakhage describes Mothlight as '...what a moth might see from birth to death if black were white and white were black.' Indeed, viewed as a meditation on life and death, the overall effect is exhilarating as well as devastating."
